Andaman on the Runway

[Dries Van Noten F/W 2010]

This past week was possibly the worst to be away from a computer (and internet for that matter), however, my circumstances were not exactly unfortunate. While Paris Fashion Week, and of course, the Oscars passed by, I was snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beautiful coast of Thailand. As I looked down upon the colors of fish and coral in the clear turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, I could only be reminded of the Dries Van Noten collection I took a peek at the night before I left. Van Noten is famous for his marvelous fabrics and eye-popping colors, and this season his rich blues, greens, and yellows instantly reminded me of the stunning nautical world I fell in love with this past week.  I hope his collection brought you to far away places, as it did for me.

Here are some snapshots I took in Thailand- perhaps you can see the similarities in color and texture:

I was looking through my pictures from Thailand, and this cluster of butterflies reminded me of this Dries look (from the same collection). Is it just me or is Van Noten making a special tribute to Mother Nature?

Marc In The Land of Oz

This season, the Marc Jacobs girl has a destination. Perhaps they're not going to Oz, but it seems like they're certainly going somewhere wondrous with their small purses and their large fur coats. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was a beautifully chosen theme on Marc’s part.

"And the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true" is how the tune goes, from the famous The Wizard of Oz. Marc's message of ambition, hopes, dreams, and promise is not only enlightening, but it is also realistic. In the current economic state, not everyone is thinking about glamour and frivolous expenses. Marc’s collection reflected the current times in a very authentic manner. His tailoring was understated, and everything was beautiful, and basic. Despite the economic climate, people still have incredible visions, desires, and wishes, and Marc truly touched on that with his collection.

Milan: Dolce & Gabbana

For me, color is one of the most exciting concepts on the runway, and at first the Dolce and Gabbana a/w 2010 show seemed lacking of just that. But after the first few models walked out, I fell in love with the huge blazers and lace camisoles peeking underneath (interestingly I was reminded of the s/s 2010 Dior look especially in the add campaigns- http://www.thefashiontime.com/wp-content/themes/mimbo2.2/images/2010/01/dior.jpg)The all-black look is refreshing, classic, and simple. However, it was the gold beaded pieces that made the collection one of my favorites this season. A closer look on style.com showed that the "beading" isn't really beading at all- it's more like metallic, gold discs sewn onto the black bodices. The effect is stunning. What do you think of the Dolce and Gabbana show? Too much black or the perfect amount for this season?
